Fall is here along with some cooler weather which makes me think of gumbo. Being from Oklahoma, I have adapted to Louisiana very well… almost too well. Gumbo, crawfish, jambalaya... mmm my mouth is watering at the thought of it all.
Fall is also jeans and sweater weather… hmmm….can I still get into my jeans with all that delicious gumbo? Perhaps it’s time to start that exercise program I’ve been putting off.

I tell my patients every day that daily exercise can help prevent breast cancer. Studies have proven this. A new study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology finds that obese women have four times the risk of developing a rare type of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer, which makes up 1% to 6% of breast cancers.

Maintaining a healthy body weight and exercising regularly helps reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. Estrogen can fuel breast cancer and it has been shown that body fat raises levels of estrogen. So by reducing your body fat you can help reduce your risk.

But don’t panic, you don’t need to go on a crash diet, or worse, give up gumbo. Losing as little as 5-10% of your body weight can make a big difference in your breast cancer risk. So talk to your doctor about your breast cancer risk, get an annual screening mammogram, and remember you can still enjoy a bowl of gumbo just in moderation.

Working with children facing cancer has been one of the most humbling experiences of my entire life. Cancer is a diagnosis that affects not only the patient, but also their family members, friends, schools, and communities. Although the specific type of cancer and treatment plan may differ, for most families, the diagnosis initiates some of the same questions. Why us? Why my child? Why my family?

These are the same questions my family and I were once confronted with when my older brother was diagnosed with cancer. Upon first hearing the news, it’s as if someone has punched you in the stomach and knocked all the wind out of your body. You can’t breathe. It hurts, deep down and quite emotionally, it hurts.

As social workers, we are trained to be there for individuals and families facing great difficulties and life challenges. It means that from the point of diagnosis, we will walk beside our patients and their loved ones through the constant thunderstorm of cancer. This profession continuously provides me with the opportunity to make a difference…to provide emotional/social support in someone’s darkest hours; to sit with them and listen to their story. Allowing them to cry or be angry. To let them know it’s okay to question why this is happening. I connect them to multiple resources within the community to help ease them through one of the hardest journeys they will ever make. And more often than not, I get to be there during the celebration –after the treatment has worked and all those weeks…months…years of rigorous treatment have finally paid off. I am able to rejoice with them, and wave goodbye as they leave the hospital for the final time.

Some people say my job must be very sad and hard to do every day. To those people I politely smile and say, “Well, you’ve never had the privilege of sitting beside a child while they’re eating cake at their No Mo Chemo party!” Social work is privileged work, and pediatric oncology practice reminds me of this every single day.

Stress is the need to
make a difficult or undesirable change in order to adapt to events and
situations in life. We all go through it at some point or another. Whether
it’s financial worries, work-related troubles, tension with your partner or
perhaps your children’s behavior at home; stress is a normal part of life.

But stress isn’t always bad. It can relieve monotony, allow
for goal-directed behavior and allow us to experience joy; however, when we
experience too much stress, it can start to affect our health.

Our bodies are designed to experience stress and react to it
as a defense mechanism to avoid danger. In our high-speed, digital, 24/7 world,
we are exposed to higher levels of stress than previous generations coming at
us in all directions day and night.

With this high-stress environment, it’s no wonder that
stress is the #1 universal factor contributing to major disease. Stress can increase
the chances of illness from
heart disease, stomach issues, depression and anxiety, drug use, and even
cancers.

Avoiding stress is a good idea, but let’s be realistic,
that’s not always possible. So instead, let’s focus on ways we can cope with stress.

Define
the problem. Are you experiencing acute or chronic stress? Acute stress is the type of stress we
feel when we have a deadline to make, a test to take, or right after a car
accident. It is short-lived and goes away. Chronic
stress is more long-term, possibly stemming from an issue that has not been
resolved, such as a traumatic event for an extended period of time.

Say “No”.
You can’t do it all. It’s important to learn when to say “No” and know your
limits. Adjust your schedule as needed to reduce stress.

Get
organized. Being organized can help prevent stress. It can be as simple as
keeping your children’s book sacks in the same spot so there isn't a panic two
minutes before the bus arrives for school.

Exercise.
Being active is great for stress. Exercise releases endorphins in your brain
which help to boost your mood.

Medication.
Sometimes, if your stress is chronic and the above tips are not working for
you, you may need to talk to your doctor about possible medications that can
help.

The bottom line is don’t let stress get the best of you.
Talk to your doctor about your stress levels and remember that it’s OK to put
yourself first once in a while.

Osteopathic manipulative therapy or OMT is an advanced form
of hands-on care. It is usually
performed by Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O. or osteopath) and is useful
for easing pain, promoting healing, increasing mobility and treating asthma,
sinus disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, migraines, as well as muscle and back
pains. OMT can complement and in some
instances even replace the need for medications and surgery. It can be complementary to other forms of
manipulation and alternative therapies as well.

Like MDs, DOs are fully licensed physicians that provide a
full range of services from prescribing medications to performing surgery. DOs typically have a unique approach to
practicing medicine by looking at the whole person when determining the
diagnosis and not just the symptoms.
This comes from the belief that the body is a dynamic unit of function, has
self-regulatory mechanisms, and structure and function are interrelated at all
levels. DOs have an appreciation of the
body’s ability to heal itself.

The typical doctor’s appointment with a DO will start like
any other—height, weight, blood pressure and other vital signs, a medical history,
and a physical exam. The osteopathic
exam will look at structural alignment, function, and flexibility as well as
muscle tone and spasm. OMT is customized
for each individual patient based on their needs. The techniques used in an OMT visit can feel
anywhere from light touch to stretching to massage to cracking and popping
similar to a chiropractic treatment.
Usually patients feel great after an OMT session but some may notice
they are slightly tired or feel like they started a new workout routine—these
symptoms usually go away within 24
hours.
